The Wraith King
Also known as: The Beast King, the Necromancer (vernacular) Type: Villain — undead overlord or undead-adjacent warlord Role: Ruler of the Brookside pocket plane; controller of the World Eater; occupant of Bedegar Keep Affiliation: Commands the gnoll armies; allied with or subordinate to Mythrades / The Engineer Status (latest): Confirmed as The Engineer / Mithraides the Anthropologist. Engaged the party in Session 053 in the Bedagar Keep courtyard during the refugee evacuation. Survived the encounter at near-full power (one Legendary Resistance remaining of three). Fate of the pocket plane after the World Eater's arrival is unknown — but the Wraith King has no known vulnerability to the World Eater and likely escaped or was unharmed. First Named: Session 049
What the Party Knows
- He and his gnoll army scoured the Brookside realm after the World Eater rose, destroying every remaining village and driving survivors into the protective bubbles.
- He controls or is deeply aligned with the World Eater. The gnolls worship "the beast lord" — the World Eater — and the Wraith King operates as its de facto administrator. Whether he controls the beast directly or simply benefits from it is unclear.
- He occupies Bedegar Keep. With Mythrades / the Engineer as his associate or partner, the Wraith King operates the portal network at Bedagar Keep that channels souls and tethers the pocket plane to the Abyss.
- He took Zago's lair. "The nobles" — the Wraith King's lieutenants — seized Zago's original dragon lair and its full hoard.
- The gnolls feeding on abyssal flesh report to him. The cursed flesh operation at Crowley's Bear Cave was part of the Wraith King's broader program of demonic enhancement for his forces.
- He appeared in person in Session 053. He manifested in the Bedagar Keep courtyard — floating five feet above the ground, dark-robed — and attacked the party as they evacuated the 77 survivors through the portal. The Engineer's identity as the Wraith King was confirmed: "He is now the Wraith King." He has subsumed the Wraith King's form, power, and presence entirely.
- His power level. In combat he demonstrated: a multi-target Eldritch Burst (41 damage each), Fear cone (30ft, DC 20 Wisdom), Disrupt Life (necrotic pulse, DC 20 Con, 31 damage / half on save), Paralyzing Touch, and three Legendary Resistances. The party burned two Legendary Resistances with Banishment attempts; one remained at evacuation. He was not meaningfully hurt despite significant party focus.
- He wants Leigha. He appeared specifically to intercept the party and capture Leigha (the restored godspark / divine vessel). Why he wants her — for the soul-channeling operation, for the godspark's power, or for something else — is unresolved.
