Oaths of Blood and Shadow

You left the Mephisto coast house and you tried to be neutral.

You walked east through the dark. The cliffs went on forever. The sea was somewhere on your right, talking to itself.

A lantern burned ahead. Then a torch. Then a second lantern, of a different style. The roadblock had moved. They were waiting for you.

A second-chapter paladin sat astride a Griffon. The Griffon's name was Ladre. The paladin was unnamed to you, then. (You will learn his name later, and learn it twice.)

The conversation went on too long.

Ubys mentioned Nathaniel Lioncoster by his whole name.

Something passed across the paladin's face. It was an answer. Yes. He was ours.

The paladin reined Ladre and flew.

Ubys teleported onto the Griffon mid-flight.

The conversation got worse.

You all rolled initiative.

AC tried to follow on the ground. Ladre tried to flee with Ubys aboard. AC opened his hand and shadow tendrils boiled up from the rock and held the Griffon in place.

Ubys cast Hold Person on the paladin. It missed. Ubys teleported back to the cliff.

The paladin shouted an oath to his god and jumped off his Griffon at Ubys. The longsword caught him for eleven, for thirteen, for sixteen radiant. The paladin took nine in his own landing.

AC marked him. Tried to talk him down. Stabbed him for twelve when talking didn't take.

KeYs tried to intimidate them both into stopping.

Moist healed Ubys for thirteen.

Ubys backed up fifteen feet and cast Spirit Guardians. Stood there. Dared.

The paladin gripped his sword tighter. He looked at Lessie, at KeYs, at Moist, at Dhuxtyn. He looked at Ubys. He looked at AC.

"The fight's with those two."

He pointed at Ubys and AC.

"I sense the good in you other two. Why rally as one? Let Ladre go or this ends in death."

AC released the tendrils.

The Griffon stood. The paladin remounted. They flew off into the dark.

You stood at the cliff edge in the lantern-light, watching the sky where they'd gone.

Ser Gertz was still in the basement.

The Mephistos were still expecting protection.

The auction was imminent.

A paladin had just looked at half of you and seen good, and at the other half and seen the fight.

You started walking back toward Leilon.

Next session: a beam of light shooting up from the heart of Leilon, a paladin pinned to the tower with his own sword, and a Cursed Baron whose name should not have been spoken.
