Grey-Flame Candle
Type: Unique magical candle / time-reversion artifact Origin: Two carried by each member of the Grey-Robed Order (per the trio recovered in session 032) Current Holder: Party-pooled (6 candles; 1 already used and spent) Status (latest): 5 unused (one was lit and reset-spoken in the Rat Queen Chamber — that one is consumed)
Description
A small candle — pale, unfamiliar-wax, short-tapered. Each member of the Grey-Robed Order carried two: one in a belt-pouch, one set out in front of them as if mid-ritual placement. (The party suspects a third candle somewhere — not on the bodies they recovered. See "What the Party Knows" below.)
When lit, the candle behaves like a very dim candle — about 1' bright / 4' dim radius (5' total). You can just barely read by it.
How It Works (as the party has tested)
- Light the candle. Any flint will work (unlike the Grey-Flame Torch, which is picky).
- Hear the smoke's word. When the candle catches, a single word is whispered in the smoke. The party has heard three so far: "Hayfield." (first candle.) "Firefly." (re-light, same candle.) "Cinnamon." (third re-light.) The word is unique to each lighting — there is no correlation between code-words. (Per Ubys's working notes.)
- Anyone within ~5' of the candle hears the word. People outside the radius do not.
- Speaking the word aloud, within radius, while the candle is still lit, reverses time within the radius to the moment the candle was lit. Anything that happened to people / objects outside the radius is unaffected. Anything that happened inside the radius is un-done.
- Magical effects within radius are reversed. Moist healed KeYs within radius; KeYs walked outside, then back in; AC spoke the word; KeYs returned to her pre-healed state.
- The candle is single-anchor. The first time the candle is moved, the flame goes out — and on relighting, it appears never to have been lit on the new location. The candle's anchor-window collapses on relocation.
- Implied: the candle is single-use. Once a word has been spoken and the time-reset triggered, the candle's anchor-window is consumed. (Greg, confirm — the player notes don't strictly settle this. The party operated as if the first re-light gave a fresh word and a fresh window. So the candle may be multi-use within the same location; consumed only when moved or fully expended.)
What the Party Knows
- Two candles on each Grey-Robed body. The party recovered 6 total (2 per body × 3 bodies).
- A third candle pattern is suspected. Two candles on each body — but the party noted aloud that somewhere there should be a third. Possibilities they discussed: with the Order's living members on the other side of the portal; in the cult's possession; in the Heiress's auction lot; with The Spider.
- The mechanic is consent-fraught. The notes record that the party "feels bad" after testing the candle — they were un-doing other people's lived seconds.
