Mephisto Twins
Type: Tiefling sibling-pair operating as a two-person faction (possibly a Zariel cult cell, possibly autonomous) Affiliation: Zariel-aligned per second-chapter Knights of Vindictus read; status with the broader Cults of Zariel unclear Members: Oriana Mephisto (silk-dress, deer-horn-amulet); Mordecai Mephisto (red-skinned, spade-tailed, masked) Herald / Servant: Perfinerf (hunchbacked gnome) Base: A 4-story dilapidated coast house outside Saltmarsh, overlooking the sea Status (latest): Departed the Heiress's auction with their proceeds in session 034. Their real interest at the venue was the Heiress's medallion — not their lots. (Recovery of the medallion: flagged — see Heiress's Medallion DM Notes.) First Appearance: Session 024
Description
The Mephistos arrived in Saltmarsh shortly after the most popular tavern in town burned down — and moved into a house on the coast in the ruins of the town. The arrival timing is suspicious enough that KeYs and Ubys both note it on first reference.
The Twins commission the party in session 024 for protection at an upcoming auction, where they intend to sell or auction a map.
What the Party Knows (Sessions 024–025)
- Tiefling siblings. Oriana flirts with AC on first meeting; Mordecai is more guarded behind a hat and mask.
- They have a captive: Ser Gertz — a battered Half-Orc Knight of Vindictus held in their basement. The second-chapter KoV (Sir Titus's chapter) has demanded his return by sunrise.
- They appear to be selling at the auction: the map referenced in their pitch. The Twins' seller-list is distinct from the Heiress's seller-list at the same auction (per Greg's confirmation in the λ-032/033 batch wrap-up — there are two distinct lots / two distinct sellers at the venue). The Twins' lots:
- Egg of a Dragon God
- Weapons from the Dessarin Valley
- Book: "The Whispering Reed"
- (The adamantium weapons / armor lot and "The Lost King's scroll" lot surfaced in session 033 are Heiress-side lots, not Twins-side. See Heiress's Manor.)
- The "Checkmate" telepathic interjection during their pitch suggests a third party is observing or wagering on the meeting's outcome. Sender unknown.
- Session 034 — the auction proper.
- Rode south with the party in their stagecoach (driven by Perfinerf), disguised as Waterdhavian high-elf nobles (spell-disguise; they explained the cover up front).
- Carried Sir Gertz in the carriage — fully turned out in finery, giddy as a child under a charm spell; selling him as the auction's headliner lot. The Heiress won him for >220,000 GP.
- Sold their three lots — Egg of a Dragon God (withdrawn; not present), Dessarin Valley weapons (sold via Alondriel to King Grol), and The Whispering Reed (won by Mythrades for >150,000 GP).
- Were fixated on the Heiress's medallion through the entire event (per Lessie's perception read; corroborated by Greyden's knock-class-key identification). The medallion was their real reason for being at the auction.
- Departed before the post-auction combat broke out — the Twins took their proceeds and left; whether they took the medallion with them is the open question of the post-session-034 arc. See Heiress's Medallion.
